There are many ways to spend time with the Lord and His Word. This one only requires a Bible, notepad, and a pen…
Open your Bible to today’s reading. Start with a prayer to hear from God, then take your time reading. Expect God’s Word to speak to you. When you are done, look for a verse that particularly spoke to you and write it word-for-word in your notepad.
What is it that struck you and caught your attention in what you read? What do you think God is saying to you in this scripture? Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what He wants you to see. Paraphrase the passage in your own words along with your thoughts on why it struck you: Is there a narrative that challenges one of your narratives? Does it encourage you in some way? Is there a truth to obey? A promise to believe? A warning to heed? A truth about the character of God? A challenge it addresses?
Personalize what you have read, by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Write how this scripture can apply to you today. How could you think or act differently? What does it reveal about your character: who you are when no one is looking? Maybe it applies to a current life challenge, or maybe it is something best shared with some close friends.
Write out your prayer as a note to God. This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this scripture, or it may be a greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Adore Him for who He is. Confess to Him who you are. Thank Him for what He’s done. Ask Him for what you need. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what He has to say!
